The first republic state of the world – Vaishali (Bihar)
Vaishali is the accent city of Bihar.It was the capital city of the Licchavi. It was the first republic state. In 599 BCE, 24th Bhagwan Mahavira was born here. Vaishali is pious and auspicious pilgrimage to Jains. Gautama Buddha preached his last sermon before his death in c. 483 BCE.It contains one of the best-preserved of the Pillars of Ashoka, topped by a single lion by great king Ashoka.
Gautam Buddha visited here many times.It was very large city, rich and prosperous, crowded with people and with abundant food. There were 7,707 pleasure grounds and an equal number of lotus ponds. Its courtesan, Amrapali, was famous for her beauty, and helped in large measure in making the city prosperous, she was crowned as “Nagar Badhu” of Vaishali. One of the best-preserved of the Pillars of Ashoka, topped by a single Asiatic lion present here. There is an Archaeological Survey of India museum near the Vishva Shanti Stupa
The city finds mention in the travel accounts of Chinese explorers, Faxian (4th century CE) and Xuanzang (7th century CE), which were later used in 1861 by British archaeologist Alexander Cunningham to first identify Vaishali with the present village of Basrah in Vaishali District, Bihar.
Vaishali Mahotsava is celebrated by both the Digambara and the Shwetambara Jains. The festival is held on the birthday of Lord Mahavir, the Jain Teerthankar, on 13th day of the bright half of the Chaithra month. The festival is celebrated among Jain followers all across the country generally but Vaishali Mahotsava has especial appearance in this regard. State government organize a cultural program on the occasion of this Mahotsava. Popular artist perform. Vaishali is around 60KM from the state capital Patna.
