History of Patna
Patna is the capital of Bihar. It is the largest city of Bihar. It is one of the oldest city of the wolrld. Patna became significant around the year 490 BCE when Ajatashatru, the king of Magadha, wanted to shift his capital from the hilly Rajagrha to a more strategically located place to combat the Licchavis of Vaishali. He chose the site on the bank of the Ganges and fortified the area. Gautama Buddha passed through this place in the last year of his life. He prophesied a great future for this place, but at the same time, he predicted its ruin from flood, fire and feud.
490 BCE Ajatashatru ruled Pataliputra. Pataliputra as a capital of the Magadha, Nanda, Maurya and Sunga Empire. In 323 BCE Dhana Nanda was greatest king of Nanda Empire. Chandragupt Maurya was the founder of the Maurya Empire. Ashoka the Great also born in Maurya Empire, Patliputra largest extent under Ashoka Empire. Pataliputra was also capital of Sunga Empire.
